Finished!

Finished the Argil tank! Very happy with it! Great pattern all around—well-written, interesting construction, a nice balance of mindless and interesting, and easy to see progress by the stripes. 100% would make again!

I really like the yarn as well, Mandarin Petit from Sadnes Garn.

My clematis is a hit in the backyard too!

what i did on my summer vacation day five: fair entry day

friday morning is always the busiest of our cottage week - getting entries ready for the fair!

i didn't have quite as many as usual, but didn't have time to spend finishing any needlework at the cottage with a raft to build. also i was sad to see that my squirrel pattern did not include any instructions at all for the tail! that's the second time that's happened to me with cottage knitting, grr.

anyway, i did have a fairly hefty bag of stuff to take in: a ghostbusters costume, my scissors shirt (yay len's mill for giving me another snippet of the fabric!) maple leaf forever cardigan, linen middy pullover, double-leaf saroyan scarf, end of year leaf cloth, pyjamas...

and some cookies, and brownies, and (not great) jams, and really awful cucumbers:

(those aren't the world's worst cucumbers; i left the world's worst cucumbers on the vine, because they looked more like avocados.)

then it was back for lunch. having a big roast chicken for dinner on the first night was a very strategic decision; the rest of the week, lunch was salad with various leftover veg (peas and beets, here) and then topped with chicken breast. lots of protein and nutrients for the carpenter.

speaking of, frame all done! all that's left is to flip it upright into the water, nail on the top boards, and then float it out 50 feet where we'll anchor it.

things are getting done!

i feel like i am finally getting productive around here!

first, i planted some seeds, and they are almost all sprouted!

unfortunately this means i have to thin them out. which is my least favourite thing. i want them all to live! which they won't if i don't thin them out. cognitive dissonance. whatever.

i also have some sharp navy twill that i was thinking would make a pair of capris and a sweet little jacket, something betty draper-ish, along these lines:

after looking at all kinds of patterns online, i finally dug into my own stash and found this:

perfect! i also found this, which looks cheesey:

but with a couple of alterations (adding a high waist, and nipping in the back darts for a better fit), i have some awesome linen trousers. i just need to get some buttons.

and i also finished another long-awaited but super small/easy project - sewing up the pockets on these capris, as they are too small to use, and gape open awkwardly. hoping these look more tailored now!

spring is springing!

well this was a nice surprise!

beautiful weather on the weekend. rooting around the shelves by the back door, i found this old pot of mini-daffs which i'd tucked out of the way last spring. i used to always chop the leaves off and set the bulbs to dry, and then throw out the dessicated husks a year later when i accepted defeat, but this time i decided to leave the tops on, as suggested by ontario today's ed lawrence.

look lovely, don't they?

but when you peer inside...

and trim away the dead stuff... voila!

so i took my similarly decrepit front porch planter...

and planted.

of course, on the radio they just said we'd have snow on wednesday, but what's springtime for if not hopefulness?

the cop-out post

i really haven't been doing anything. i just don't have the energy. but project constant gardener has kept going without me. everything is out of control, actually. the pumpkin is completely taking over, growing a metre or two every week (this isn't even the most recent picture, and already it looks small to me here):

pumpkin attack!

and i've got a ton of lettuces going too:

the relaxing chair

i spent some time staking up the tomatoes today (they got knocked down by the pumpkin vine) and discovered that there were green beans, which i had given up on! also a couple of cucumbers on the way. it's no surprise then that we're having salad with dinner tonight, with vinaigrette with fresh tarragon and marjoram.
