Don't kid yourself, Caesar...

Oh, Coen brothers. I have loved so many of your movies. I think that Hail, Caesar! is getting more criticism than it would have had the release not come on the heels of #OscarsSoWhite.

But neither of these facts gives you a pass on your obtuse comments as reported in the Daily Beast.

It's easy to say Oscars don't matter when you already have several. For an objective answer, how about comparing the salaries of Oscar winners to nominees, or those who have never been nominated? For men, there's a big bonus. Male actors experience an 81% bump in salary after nabbing an Oscar according to Forbes in 2013. Women just see their salaries drop as they age, but that's a rant for another day.

Setting aside the straight-up offensiveness of comparing "black or Chinese or Martians" there are two main responses I have to the Coens' assertions about "how things get made."

Diversity isn't about saying "I’m going to write a story that involves four black people, three Jews, and a dog." It's about letting go of the assumption that blacks, Jews, etc. must be a certain kind of character acting in a certain kind of way. When you sent out sides to casting agents - did they include "white" as a qualifier? Or is that just assumed? Do you look at all capable actors when casting or just those that "have the right look"? And why is "black" not the right look for a chemistry teacher, a judge, a neighbour?

Why can't people of colour just be people, without everything they do having to be an expression of their racialized state? Jodie Foster is famous for getting her agent to send her out for roles that were written as male, when the sex of the character is irrelevant to the plot. She can do that – because she's an established white Oscar-winner! (maybe Oscars do matter!) It doesn't generally work so well when black actors try to audition for "white" roles – although white people seem to have no trouble getting cast as everything from Cleopatra to Michael Jackson to Aang from The Last Airbender.

Now, I know how the argument goes, colourblind casting may work for, say, a modern cop drama, but with a period piece set in a time of segregation, you can't just randomly cast people of colour without rewriting the story to address how they would have been treated at the time. Obviously, if you're setting a movie in Hollywood’s "golden age" race was not a neutral factor at that time. Sure. The only stories that occur to you are those about people who look like yourself and the people you spend most of your time with.

But the next question is, who is paying for this? Out of all the ideas that get pitched to studios, how come the ones that get the money, distribution, and marketing support are all coincidentally about white people?

Having seen what goes on behind the scenes in casting, I know firsthand it's not pretty.

My experience here is more television than movie, but considering how intertwined the industries are, I doubt the system is very different for the big screen.

Ok, so casting. You send out sides. Agents send in head shots. They call to pitch their favourites. Some people get called for auditions, some (most) don't. But let's say you've got a great actor who happens to be black, and a determined agent who gets her an audition, a director who thinks she's the perfect fit, and a producer who is willing to listen to an assistant talking about how a show set in a very multi-cultural city should look like the city where it's set.

But it doesn't stop there. The producers – all those people who traded some coin for an executive producer credit so they could enjoy the power of holding sway over someone's career – they all get to air their feelings about whether the actor "looks right." But the real horrors happen when distribution gets involved. What does she look like? When you say black, you mean mulatta? What is her hair like? Can we see a photo? Oh! When you said mulatta, we thought you meant cubana, not black! (not making this up, seriously) we can't sell this in foreign markets with an afro. Can she straighten her hair?

And no, in the end, she did not get the part. The part went to a blonde woman. In fact, all the women cast in the series that year were blonde. The returning lead, a redhead, had her hair dyed blonde too. Diversity!

Yes, the Oscars are important. And no, the lack of diversity in Hollywood is not due solely to auteurs being true to their artistic vision. Maybe in the hallowed circles in which the Coens move, far above the fray, it's possible to believe that. For everyone in the real world, not so much.

So please, Coens, keep your mouths shut. Drop the silly "I don't understand the question" shtick. You're making yourselves look not just dumb, but selfish. Keep quiet so we can enjoy your movies without the bitter taste of racism to ruin it all.

craft show coming up!

too much going on!

the kid and i have been sick for the last couple of weeks, and all of a sudden it's almost xmas... our annual party is coming up in just over a week, and then i have a craft fair just after that!

the fair is for a good cause though - the canadian hearing society. it will be at stan wadlow clubhouse on sunday 14 december, from 10 o'clock to 4 in the afternoon. i will be selling cute stuff for cut boys - hats, shirts, bowties, toys. and a few knitting patterns.

hope to see you there!

resolution time: get organised

gah!!

today i started on a big task: organising the stash. i have way too much stuff. it's crazy. most of it tucks away in the bay window seat, which looks innocent enough when closed...

but when opened, reveals a horrible mess!

i have a bad habit of starting projects and not finishing them. i cut and pin fabric, and then put it away. mostly this is because it is difficult to find the space & time to work with fabric and pins and scissors and machines with a 6-year-old boy in the house. i get as much done as i can, and then get interrupted and put it all away. because of this, i tend to cut out multiples, say, four shirts at once, and then get one sewn if i'm lucky. but with extras cut out, i am theoretically read to go at any time! theoretically. here we have four shirts, three or four skirts, and cushion covers.

ideally, by the end of this endeavour, all the uncut fabric will be measured, packed, and labelled like this:

instead of giant bags of mixed-up misery, like this yarn:

i got my "projects on the go" down to one bag from two. and i did manage to fill a whole bag of scraps and leftovers to get rid of. embarrasing, really.

and, i managed to cram it all back in - plus all my sewing patterns as well. i have another box of sewing notions that need sorting, and knitting patterns that need to get in there, too.

it all looks remarkably civilised when the lid is closed!

stash busting

finished the shelburne mittens today!

i still have close to three skeins of the rowan big wool left in my stash, too. i've had this for an embarrassing amount of time - nine or ten years? eek.

still, it's getting some love now. and based on the fact that the last, lost cowl i knit of this took two full skeins, i predict that the cowl i've just cast on will use up all of the rest.

i'm using the same stitch pattern as for the mitts - p1 k2, with the k2 doing a cable twist on every second row. it's super stretchy, with more character than a plain rib. i may do a drawstring to make it hat-able as well, i think there's a pattern in one of my vintage books for a hat that is basically a tube with a drawstring - maybe in the lux book? we'll see when i get there.

whether cowl or hat, it will be a great companion to these thick warm mitts!

30.12.13

sick day!

i have been trying to fight off a head cold for the better part of the week, and i think it has finally got me. so, to bed.

but the good thing about that is knitting! i've finished a mitten this morning, and right away seem to have lost the 5mm circ i knit it on, so can't start the second. back to the madtosh cardigan i suppose.

speaking of madtosh, i got a skein of sock in esoteric in my stocking! will need to hunt down another one (or two?) for a cardigan in that. i am all fingering-weight cardigan all the time right now.

but still sad that my zigzaggy cardigan in knitpicks stroll got felted a bit in the wash. sigh. still wearable, but just not the same...

17.11.13

gack! another christmas is nearly at our throats!

being largely out of commission for the last... three weeks? has it been three whole weeks? i guess it has, maybe even four. yikes. surgery does that to you, i guess.

anyway.

this weekend i had a little panic about the holidays being almost here and our party being just three weeks away and needing to send out invites and and and...

so after spending friday morning at the paediatrician's with a sick kid (he woke up literally sobbing with pain from an ear infection) i got to work. i started by writing a cookie dough inventory (cookie dough is one of those things you can do ahead and freeze): imperial cheddar, viennese icebox, hamantaschen, sugar cookies, chestnut shortbread, done. and today, i'm going to make gingerbread dough. nice to get a few things ticked off the list.

then, i made a list of everything i need to make for the party and xmas dinner, and started in. fruitcake needs to be done early so it can "ripen," so i started by digging through the freezer to find candied peel i'd made earlier. found lemon, orange, and grapefruit! all currently soaking in sherry and rum so i can bake my fruitcakes today. also found a bag of organic cranberries, so made cranberry sauce. and while i was at it, red onion relish and red pepper jelly. picked the last of the arugula from our garden and made artichoke dip, subbing the arugula for spinach. candied some more peel too, since i ate a couple of grapefruits yesterday (need vitamin c!).

and a bit of good/bad news; the bad news is the health food store in our neighbourhood is closing. the good news is bulk foods are 40% off, so i bought a ton of flour of various kinds, along with pecans and cashews and sea salt.

finally, i decided to try my hand at something that's always frightened me a bit - puff pastry! it's resting in the fridge now, and i'm thinking - the brick you can buy frozen is 400g (divided into two squares of 200g each) - this is about double that by weight, so i am going to divide it into pieces, freeze most, and use one today as a tester - that way i'll have an idea about whether or not it worked! also i love palmiers, so i am keen to make some. will post pics later, hope it's a success!

1.10.13

oops!

just noticed that i have gone a full month without a post... whoops.

but!

i have been busy, as usual.

i have shirt #1 done, i've made cushion covers for the living room, grape jam and candied lemon peel, started a knitting project when i ran out of yarn for the cardigan i was working on, then the yarn came in so i'm back to getting that done.

and back to school mania etc., with the kiddo in various programs and all manner of extracurricular whatnot. went to mini maker faire, brief jaunt to ottawa, and on and on. busy month.

but!

i am just starting a project that truly fits the official mandate of filmcraft: the kid's costume this hallowe'en is none other than peter venkman, ghostbuster par excellence.

i have discovered an immense cache of online ghostbuster lore, with endless project plans for accurate homemade replica proton packs and whatnot, and numerous sellers of supplies. it's crazy out there.

for this project, my stash helpfully includes a sewing pattern for a kid's jumpsuit (size 5, will need altering), which is an easy place to start. i have the guts of an old backpack to use as a base for the proton pack - which will be not so much authentic, as functional for the kiddo to use as a backpack after hallowe'en is over. i have fabric and a friday to get started with the elna supermatic.

meanwhile, i need to strategize my proton pack. i've looked at all the superelite plans with instructions on how to mold plastic and whatnot; some of those will provide inspiration, but the kids will be strictly sewing (and perhaps knitting - i can see i-cord being useful).

my summer vacation day six: gin & f scott fitzgerald

our last full day on the lake! too soon, too soon. so, the goal was to spend as much time on the water as possible.

so, no sewing, no knitting, almost no cooking - just cucumber sandwiches, gin & lemonade, fresh peaches and cherries, and reading on the dock.

i re-read the great gatsby a few weeks ago, after realising (when the latest film version came out) how long it had been since i read the book, and how little i remembered. and i enjoyed it so much, that when i saw a copy of tender is the night while at a bookstore, i decided to read that, too. it's so much more personal than gatsby, much more looking inward than outward, much more broken.

all of which makes the sad tale of the introduction feel like a punch in the gut: that fitzgerald slaved and worried over this book for years and his response to the poor critical and commercial reception it received. it's like putting all your effort into making amends and trying to win back the heart of someone who know longer loves you with the greatest most dangerous act you can imagine, and receiving only the dull response of "huh, i don't get it."

i suppose that's just the way it goes, sometimes.

also, i got a sunburn.

n.b. these summer vacation posts are one week delayed as the cottage is delightfully free of electronics!

16.8.13

my summer vacation day five: fair entry day!

well, i did not finish my embroidery. but i did manage to get some extra baking done, brownies and shortbread, and got everything dropped off. eighteen entries total! there was a moment of drama as my pillowcase with lace trim disappeared without being duly checked off the list - being white-on-white, it got mixed up with the sleep pants - but soon the mystery was sorted out.

this was my day of real relaxation - no cooking save breakfast! we ate our meals in town, and the fair kept us entertained so once we got ourselves out of the cottage, i didn't have to organize anything. yahoo!

n.b. these summer vacation posts are one week delayed as the cottage is delightfully free of electronics!

7.6.13

sick week productivity

ok, it is next to impossible to be productive when sick. i can barely think enough to read. fortunately, i can think enough to knit plain stockinette in the round!

so here's my sick week output:

purple zigzaggy cardigan - done.

misc winter knits - washed and blocked.

list of potential & completed entries into fenelon fair (includes above cardigan & winter knits) - started.

mindless gazing at knitting patterns for potential stash-busting projects - started yes, finished never.

here's a list of what's done & ready for the fair, which is generally the big finale of our cottage week:

  • costume - hand made for a child
  • children's pullover - plain knit
  • ladies' cardigan - knit
  • ladies' pullover - knit
  • ladies' mitts
  • men's scarf

shockingly, there is no shawl category.

and here's my aspirational list of things i'd like to do & enter:

  • children's sleepwear
  • children's mitts - knit
  • children's article of clothing - (other than listed above)
  • ladies' fancy crochet or knit sweater
  • ladies' any clothing article (sewn)
  • tea towel (1) thread embroidery
  • tea cozy
  • pillow case (1) lace trim
  • scented sachet
  • christmas tree decoration (3) different
  • christmas table runner
  • christmas gift wrapped box (not to exceed 12")
  • christmas toy
  • strawberry jam
  • other culinary items tbd

come august, we can all look back on this and laugh!

a word of advice on bay window seats

Ever since I posted about building my bay window seat, it’s been a popular search term here. More specifically, people have been searching for “bay window seat dimensions.”

You can't search for bay window seat dimensions.

Unless, of course, you are building a house from scratch, and wondering how big to make your bay window so that it will be right-sized for a comfy seat.

If however you already have a bay window, and want to build a seat in it, you need to measure what you’ve got. They’re all different, every last one. And if you have an older home—the kind more likely to have a big ol’ bay window just crying out for a bay window seat—your bay window is likely to be just a little bit wonky, due to the settling of the house over time and whatnot.

You cannot look this stuff up!

That said, if anyone is building a house from scratch and does want to know the particular dimensions of my particular window seat, it's 90” wide, 22” inches deep, and the seat is 22” off the ground. Each triangly bit is 30” wide, and the middle rectangly bit is 30” wide as well. If someone would care to drop off some high-density foam that fits these dimensions so I can finally make the cushion to go on the top, I’d be most grateful.

30.10.12

another sick day

i feel like i have had a creature lodged in my sinus cavity behind my eyes for the past week, and it has finally won the battle for supremacy in my head. body aches, mild nausea, sore throat, pick a symptom and i've got it. last night i had a lovely neo-citran and am tempted to do that again but afraid i'll fall asleep and miss picking up my son at lunch!

and today is an important day. for today his afternoon preschool program is having their hallowe'en party! so i will bring his costume & dress him up before i take him over there. pics to follow. i hope the jacket fits all right, i haven't had a chance to try it on him. eep!

meanwhile, we're supposed to bring a snack or something to share with the kiddies. i was going to just bring something prefab, but since i'm home, i've dug up a muffin recipe that looks fairly low-effort. roasting a squash from the garden for it as we speak.

and now, i think it is time to retire to the chesterfield with another episode of brideshead revisited and a pot of tea!

29.10.12

down to the wire, as always

it's the night before the hallowe'en party at the kiddo's preschool, and i'm still sewing. and suffering - feeling flu-ish actually, some creature took up residence in my sinuses last week, and i've held it at bay so far, but i think it's about to win. sigh.

thankfully all that's left to do is a little hand-sewing. the wonderful tg googled solutions to my supermatic's problems yesterday while i was out, and presented me with a printout of solutions. reading it after a nap, it was easy to diagnose the problem: needle inserted at wrong height! fixed and yay.

6.10.12

another busy day

thanksgiving is upon us once again! so today i'm making the same as last year: my usual 2 pumpkin pies, and the non-pumpkin dessert is once again sticky toffee pudding. when i asked the beenster what i should make in addition to the pies, he said "pudding" and looked at me like i was crazy for even asking. so, pudding it is! and cheese crackers. my brother-in-law dropped by this morning, and saw a big lump of imperial cheddar in a bowl with some softening butter, and said, "is that cheese? it - wait! you're making - mmmmmmm! happy!" which is pretty much the kind of reaction that makes me want to do more more more. love the appreciation!

29.9.12

the crunch

it's coming. in just 2 weeks, i'm going to have a table at my first ever craft fair!

it's happening at withrow park clubhouse on saturday 13 october, and it's a fundraiser for fair toronto, a group i'm involved with that works to improve accessibility to toronto's parks & rec programs. so far i have a bunch of hats, and a bunhc of fabric to make other stuff, and a desperate need for more time! yikes. also thinking of printing out some knitting patterns for sale. and i'm going to be selling some handspun for a fellow raveller!

ok enough time-wasting. need to get to work!

20.9.12

piecaken: part 2

next time i get one of these crazy ideas, please stop me. i'm always biting off more than i can chew.

so this morning i got up, had a shower, made lunches for the kiddo & me, got breakfast, biked to work by 8 o'clock, left for lunch at 11 o'clock so i could bike over to the school to pick up the kiddo from kindergarten and take him to afternoon pre-school, then back to work for 1 o'clock, found out about a new last-minute horrible work thing i need to get done for monday, worked on that, emailed it to myself at home to work on more, biked to the preschool, picked up the kid, rode him home, did the final step in the glace cherries, made a lasagna from scratch, worked on a jigsaw puzzle with the kid (fine motor skills + hopefully helping with his tendency to make his letters flipped or rotated), ate lasagna with family, started makind cake batter, went upstairs to get the kiddo to brush his teeth and discovered an "accident," got mop, offered encouragement & training in how to mop, re-mopped myself for effectiveness, brushed the teeth, bathed the kiddo, read him a story, finished cake batter, put cakes in oven, dialled in to national conference call for non-profit group, took cakes out of oven, allowed to cool, flipped one out onto a rack and realised that it is still bloody liquidy on the bottom, argh, returned cake to pan (not easy) and thence to oven, texted husband to ask to get sugar at 24-hour grocery since i used it all up on the cherries and don't have any left for frosting, etc. etc. etc...

you can tell the vanilla/peach is the one i flipped onto the rack. sigh. we can fix it in post. aka icing.

19.9.12

still with the cherries, and something more ridiculous

i'm on day five of the glace cherries recipe. soon, soon! just did my first boil of the cherries, here they are waiting for their syrup for a 12-hour soak:

another thing i'm starting tonight: piecaken. i first heard of it from a co-worker, a few months ago. then, he was hit by a car, and injured badly. i promised him a piecaken on his return to work. so today, the buzz in the office was rob's return, and i asked "when is his first day back?" and was told this friday. eep! so pastry for pies is in the fridge resting, after dinner i'll run out and get some cherries & peaches and get the pies baked tonight. tomorrow, the cakes. friday morning, assemble, then drive to work. departmental meeting at 10 o'clock. yikes!

15.9.12

eek!

in a fit of typical biting off more than i ought to be chewing, i've signed up for a table at a craft fair! it's a fundraiser for fair toronto, so a good cause and all, but still. this is supposed to be my cooking day, but i'm half-tempted to take this rare all-by-myself opportunity to go and get some fabric and whatnot. i have a few hats done already, which is good, but i know i can sew faster than i knit, given the time to myself! i figure leftovers will go in my long-abandoned etsy store (i'll link to that when there's actually something to link to), and was thinking of printing up some knitting patterns for sale, too. hmm.

19.6.12

need to find that camera!

for a couple of reasons...

i have no pics of the cowichan-style cardigan i made for the kiddo, no decent pics of the vest i am working on currently. and we're going to a birthday party saturday, and after that, the cottage! so i will finally get a chance to compare my curtain fabric against the actual curtains, and see if i got the colour and scale correct. i'm thinking too, i made an all-over oak-leaf pattern which i might want to make more random. but mainly i just want to see if the colours are good so i can place an order and start quilting!

10.6.12

house is a mess, but i am busy...

caught up with 8 eps of mad men on the train last week, and started strategising for the fenelon fair. i went through the prize list, made a list of everything that made me think "oh, i'd like to do that," and then ordered it by done-ness/doability.

2 sections are already covered (child's cardigan - the space invaders cardi for the kiddo; and infant's knitted dress - the daisy dress i started eons ago but never actually finished until a month or two ago). those, believe it or not, are already tagged with sample materials attached. whoo!

next, are the half-started projects, the xmas pyjamas that were already cut and pinned, the "ladies sleep pants" (aka pj bottoms) i'd already bought fabric for, a child's top-and-shorts set i'd been meaning to make and had fabric for, etc. since i started focussing on this a few days ago, i've got the xmas pjs thisclose to done, have cut out the fabric for the sleep pants (actually a whole set of pjs), and cut and pinned the top-and-shorts. there are more projects on this list too, that i've already had in mind to the point of having bought the materials.

the next category is the pipe dreams. sure, i'd like to make a quilt. and there will by xmas decorations made, i could just make them early. ha, ha, ha.

final category is baked goods that i won't worry about till the week of.

i see ribbons in my future!
