Slow recovery

Wow, has it been a year? I’m surprised, but I’m not surprised.

A year ago, I tripped and fell and broke my shoulder and my glasses and got whiplash and needed five stitches in my forehead and got a concussion.

So, I’ve been on disability leave, and not doing a lot. Although I’m finally cleared to start a gradual return to work in a couple of weeks.

Hear and there over the year, I’ve made an attempt to work on a sewing project. I have enough fabric in my stash and even half-started projects you’d think it would be easy!

For example, last winter I was unable to make xmas pyjamas like I always do. I had a set cut out and even pinned before the accident, but that’s as far as I got. This past summer, I managed to finish the top, but couldn’t even find the bottoms! I may have already sewn them? I don’t even remember! Many memories have been lost.

I had a shirt and skirt combo in a holiday print cut and pinned as well. Haven’t attempted the shirt yet; skirt was a struggle despite being simpler. Also I’ve put on weight, so it doesn’t quite fit.

But yesterday I finished a project started, I think, in June. And which had been brewing in my mind for years. A fluffy terry beach romper, inspired by (and featuring the buttons from) a cover-up my dad had from the 1960s. His was pale blue stripes; for me, I chose red and white.

I was excited to find cheap towels that were just the stripes I was looking for, but as soon as I got into it, had a bit of buyer’s remorse—this stuff slips and frays and catches like nobody’s business. Ah well. This has not been a year of great decision-making!

Anyway it’s finally finished, just in time for me to pack away all my summer things until next year. Timing is everything!
